Muncaster Castle makes a wonderful full day. The gardens, Castle, Hawk and Owl Centre and Meadowvole Maze offer something for everyone. The breath-taking vista of the Western Lakeland fells and Scafell Pike (England’s highest mountain) mean the views alone make the trip worthwhile.

The Hawk & Owl Centre within the gardens of Muncaster Castle comprises the lawned Owl Garden with aviaries and mews, plus the adjacent Old Rose Garden where there is a flying arena. The Centre is home to a diverse range of birds for you to wonder at and enjoy, from massive to minute and bizarre to familiar but all rarely seen up-close.

The Laurel and Hardy Museum started life as one man’s collection stemming from his lifelong love of ‘the boys’. Starting out as a few scrapbooks of photos, the collection grew over time until it filled one small room with pictures covering all the walls and even the ceiling.

As the collection grew, Bill Cubin researched more about the lives of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy and found that Stan had not been born in North Shields, as was widely thought at the time, but his grandparent’s house in Ulverston. In 1976, as mayor of the town, Bill uncovered the proof he was looking for, a birth certificate stating that Arthur Stanley Jefferson (Stan changed his name in 1931) was born in Foundry Cottages, now named Argyle Street.

The collection kept growing and Bill found others who shared his interest, resulting in the occasional private showing. These proved popular and he opened his quirky little room up more and more until an official opening was arranged in 1983, the ribbon being cut by Jeffrey Holland of Hi-Dee-HI fame. While the collection grew, the space didn’t until 1992 when Nico Morits won a Dutch TV quiz and donated his winnings which enabled the museum to open an extension, this time securing Bella Emberg from the then popular Russ Abbott show. Bill died in 1997 but the museum continued, being run first by his daughter Marion and now his grandson Mark.

Cumbria Crystal was founded in 1976 by Lord and Lady Cavendish to produce exceptional, handmade full lead crystal tableware. The artisan workforce was initially recruited from Stourbridge, historically the heart of the English crystal industry, and a team of craftspeople re-located to Ulverston at the southern edge of the English Lake District. The Company has remained small and true to its artisan roots. They believe it is important customers can watch crystal being made using historic techniques, so we are invited to  take a self-guided factory tour where we can watch the entire glass making process.

Today, the Company produces crystal for all the British Embassies and Residencies across the world to grace formal dinners and state occasions. Cumbria Crystal supplied the majority of the crystal for the internationally acclaimed TV drama Downton Abbey, the Georgian inspired Grasmere pattern, designed by Lady Cavendish, suits the formal Edwardian tables to perfection.
