• The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has a proud history, stretching back over seven decades, with the first official performance taking place in 1950.

• It delivers world-class, public military events, rooted in Scottish tradition.

• The Tattoo takes its name from the cry of innkeepers in Belgium and the Netherlands over 300 years ago. They ordered "Doe den tap toe" (turn off the taps) when the fifes and drums of the local regiment marched through the streets signalling the soldiers to return to their Barracks. Over time this evolved into a military music performance, and the event we know and love today.

• The first Show was inspired by a simple show called ‘Something About a Soldier’ in 1949 at the Ross Bandstand. From these humble beginnings, the performance now takes place on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade and is a global showcase of talent, enjoyed by fans from around the world.

• There are several Tattoos performed all over the world, however The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is the most well known and longest running.

 

Important: The Tattoo takes place in the ancient historic setting on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, at the top of a steep hill, which may present some access difficulties for some, particularly the elderly with disabilities or of limited mobility. Please ask for our advice before booking the tour.

 

The Winnock Hotel, Drymen – near to Loch Lomond A former 18th-Century coaching inn, The Winnock Hotel has been lovingly restored and takes centre stage on the village green, looking out over spectacular surroundings. All the en-suite bedrooms are sympathetically decorated with TV, telephone, and tea/coffee-making facilities. The hotel has cosy lounges, a bar, covered and heated outdoor decking area, and a characterful restaurant.  There is no lift, but ground floor rooms are available on request. Single Room  supplement £89.
